Are there any budding Drupal aficionados in or around Guildford?
I've been aware for quite some time that there appears to be a whole load of web designers and developers in and around Guildford, but not so many Drupal developers specifically or even people who have heard of Drupal...
(See here if you want to get the lowdown on what Drupal is.)
Or is that just that I've been unlucky not to find you yet? :)
Perhaps it's the development learning curve that keeps other web design companies within their comfort zone of proprietary content management systems. Now, I don't mean to put down anyone else's custom built CMS (in fact before we started using Drupal we were happy with our own CMS) however... there are some great (huge) benefits that come from the whole Drupal development eco-system.
To name the one aspect of Drupal that stands out for me is the community of users and developers alike and this cannot be understated. Drupal thrives on community collaboration and sharing of ideas, however it is my impression that the Drupal development community in and around Guildford is either demonstrating a typical Surrey quietness (or politeness), or could it be that I'm totally wrong and there is a Drupal party going on right next door?
There have been attempts to arrange regular meet-ups on the Surrey group on drupal.org.uk. It appears a handful of people met up in Guildford early last year but nothing has happened since.
So..... if there are any developers, designers, themers, users..... or any body else involved in creating web sites who would be interested in getting some kind of regular meet up in Guildford (or another town close by), please leave a comment below. If there is enough support then I'll try to arrange an informal meet and greet to discuss a plan of action.
If you live in or near Guildford (e.g. Farnborough, Farnham, Aldershot, Fleet, Woking, Godalming, Haslemere, Dorking etc.) it will be good to hear from you. I don't want to exclude any place in particular so please tell me if you're interested but may be a further distance from Guildford. It would be good to get a small collective of people together before Drupalcon in London in August. Three of us from Real Life Design are going (Rob, myself and Damian) so it will be good to see some of you up there.
If you're interested in learning more about Drupal and the types of web sites that we design and develop, then I'll be only too happy to chat over some examples.
Viva la Drupal!

Resources for learning Drupal
Hi there,
I come across new resources all the time for learning Drupal. There's pretty much everything to suit your learning style. Take the learning style test.
If you're looking for something online the guys at Lullabot have created drupalize.me. Lullabot's own web site has an "ideas" section with video podcasts and blog articles.
There are some great step-by-step tutorials on using Drupal modules on the Drupal Therapy web site
Also, you might want to check out the Mustard Seed Media screencasts.
If you're more of a book worm then the O'Reilly book Using Drupal is very good as an introduction to Drupal.
You'll find many resources on the Internet. However be sure that you find out which version of Drupal they relate to. I would say that the vast majority of resources still lean toward Drupal 6 as Drupal 7 only came out fairly recently (as of the time of writing.)
Most of all, the best way to learn is to download and experiment with themes and modules. For any problems you can ask for help on IRC or on the specific modules/theme's project page.
Good luck with it- if you can problem solve (either by yourself or by asking for help) and give yourself time to learn, learning to work with Drupal and the community really pays off.
Not from Nyc
Wed, 22/06/2011 - 04:59 — room divider nycI'm not actually from NYC. I'm from Manila, Philippines and I prefer online lessons the likes of w3schools. Thanks for the sincere reply I never thought you would.

Drupallers in Guildford
Thu, 23/06/2011 - 23:17 — Matt HicksHiya Barry - came across your post while Googling some Drupal related stuff :-)

Guildford meet up
Hi Matt,
The list is growing now so I'll have a look for a suitable location and try to pin some times. I'll then send them out to see when is best for everybody. Guildford seems to be a good central place. I've still got to see whether the crowd that met up last year can make it because it seems to have gone a bit quiet on the drupal.org.uk thread.
I took a look at your website lightflows.co.uk and you have some really nice work in your portfolio.
Thanks for dropping by and I'll be in touch soon....
